Government funded housing in New St, Brighton
With high immigration expected to continue, governments around Australia are struggling with the fact that there are not enough homes for people who are here now let alone those expected to arrive in the years ahead. Capital cities are becoming unpleasant places to live ( for the majority of residents ) due to high prices for homes and rents that are unaffordable for most salary and wage earners.
The government in Victoria has established housing in projects locations in the Melbourne area. Most locations are highly desirable. This one in Brighton, publicised by the government, will be highly popular.
The Victorian government issued a media release highlighting the features of the development. It reads.
Almost 300 new homes will soon be available for the community, as the first housing site developed under the Allan Labor Government’s innovative Ground Lease Model nears completion.
Minister for Housing Harriet Shing today visited the development at New St, Brighton which is one of three housing sites being redeveloped under the Ground Lease Model.
The Brighton project will deliver 291 new homes including 151 social housing homes - increasing social housing at the site by more than 18 per cent, while there will also be 140 market homes supporting growth in Melbourne’s housing supply.
Residents will move into modern and energy efficient new homes in the coming months and can look forward to a new cafe, a community pavilion, and a garden for everyone in the local community to share.
As part of the unique model to deliver this project - the Labor Government will lease the land to Building Communities to build, operate and maintain the housing for 40 years, after which the land and all homes will be returned to public ownership.
The first round of the Ground Lease Model is on track to deliver more than 1,000 homes by early 2024 across three sites in Brighton, Flemington and Prahran – along with a further 285 homes in Flemington by the end of 2026.
The Labor Government recently announced it will deliver a new round of Ground Lease Model projects – to build 1,370 new homes at Hampton East, Prahran, Port Melbourne and South Yarra.
The New St project is an addition to the Government’s landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.
Since the Big Housing Build started, more than 7,600 homes have been completed or are underway, and more than 3,000 households have either moved or are getting ready to move into brand new homes--on track for 12,000 much-needed social and affordable homes with the creation of 40,000 construction jobs.
Minister for Housing Harriet Shing, said,
“Hundreds of families will benefit from these light-filled, energy-efficient, accessible and beautiful homes in a thriving community close to schools, healthcare and public transport.”
“This project is a wonderful example of a partnership to deliver a record amount of social housing as our population grows.”
Member for Southern Metropolitan Ryan Batchelor, said,
“Residents will love the precinct’s features in New St, Brighton. I’m pleased to see our government investing to create jobs and build energy-efficient and affordable new homes in southern metropolitan Melbourne.”
